Artist Elita Patmalniece has conjured up a dreamy atmosphere in the personal exhibition “Waking Dreams” in the Liepāja Museum. On the other hand, the facade of the Liepāja Museum was only opened on November 21 a projection of images illuminates, in which the characters of Patmalniece’s paintings come to life.
The facade of the Liepāja museum has changed beyond recognition – in the multimedia performance “A moment before a dream”, the animated images of artist Elita Patmalniece’s paintings conjure up a fabulously gorgeous atmosphere for the audience, inviting them to forget the gloom of autumn, indulge in fantasy and, of course, go inside the museum, where colorful dresses, flowers and lips are swirling. and many other characters in “Waking Dreams” created by the artist.
The artist Elita Patmalniece herself says that various dreams can be found in the exhibition – both imaginary dreams and nightmares: “In principle, it turns out that I also live in dreams, but someone may have forgotten that he has to dream; when it’s Christmas, when the dark time is approaching, a person has to dream, and then maybe those dreams come true at some point.”
“It’s a craft, drawing, painting, but in this exhibition I wanted to show that it is wider than one painting, you can present your images in all kinds of ways – you can grow a whole house from one painting, you can make a video, you can make a dress, the devil knows what to create,” says the artist.
The crowded exhibition hall of the Liepāja Museum at the opening of the exhibition is a proof that the people love the art of Patmalniece and are thirsty for a colorful and cheerful atmosphere. Costume designer, Elita Patmalniece’s friend Ilze Līdere answers the question of what is the key to Patmalniece’s talent: “Elita is simply Elita, even though she is my best friend, but she is still a folk artist, a Latvian folk artist.”
The exhibition “Waking dreams” was created especially for the museum premises, the canvas paintings printed in giant formats with the images of Elite paintings are adapted to the longest walls and the audience is allowed to think – what does the artist think about when creating paintings?
“He thinks about everything,” answers Elita Patmalniece. “He thinks about life, this exhibition includes what I was inspired by, a lot of artists I like, references from different people, and then you twist and it twists into your story.”
Director of the Liepāja Museum, historian, journalist Dace Kārkla says: “Elite has introduced joy of life, color into the museum in this late autumn season, and I think that any person who enters here can enjoy the charge of energy, which awakens energy in him.”
