For the first time a group of accomplished Latvian artists will present a piece of jewellery that they have made, but jewellery artists will present a painting
This unique exhibition is sort of a challenge for the artists – to step out of the usual frameworks of expression and try out new creative forms and techniques. Art gallery Putti asked artists to be brave and to widen their artistic borders. Experimental sidestep can be a beginning of unexpected further creative quests, or it can stay as one-time adventurous experience or even as a positive joke.
Acknowledged Latvian artists will speak in the language of jewellery. They will express their thoughts, emotions and viewpoints through one of the most intimate artistic creations. Jewellery differs from other genres of art in the aspect of being in direct physical contact with body. Body can be anatomical, intimate, social, political or symbolic. Sometimes it can be substance, other times material. Body’s adornment will always be jewellery’s basic function, but it can also be a sculpture, installation, a performance. Gold, silver, jewels, semi-precious stones, beach pebbles, resin, feathers, charcoal, leather, paintings, paper and many more other materials have been intuitively used by artists to state their conceptual or formal intentions. This shows that artists don’t have an ambition to be liked by everyone. They have made jewellery that provokes thought, digs deeper, brings out a smile and instigates a provocation.
Whereas our Latvian contemporary jewellery designers will take paint brushes in their hands. Jewellery design often sublimes into other art genres, as sculpture, photo, video media and paintings. Therefore, one must conclude that the status of an art object cannot be determined only after its creation technique or appearance. This time jewellery designers will create only visually enjoyable jewels.
